I studied graphic design and illustration as a very young man at Design School in Wellington. We did insane excercises - unthinkable today in the age of the ‘mac‘, like constructing the entire Roman Alphabet with a compass and dividers and painting it with a brush in indian ink. These arcane disciplines, along with life drawing and general drawing somehow trained the eye and helped forge the basic core of ‘the designer’ in me. I give thanks to those hard taskmasters who tutored me without a computer in cooee. It is those hard learned skills that have kept me alive in hard times and also enabled me to make the leap into cyberspace. I still know how to kern type - it’s not rocket science - just a craft that seems to have all but disappeared from the sea of shitty design, in which modern life is submerged.
